Originally considered a failure by his father, he grew up with the shadow of doubt already cast over him. While powerful, he was nowhere near as powerful as previous Princes had been. He also could not originally summon Marchosias, who had been the minion of the royal ether for 700 generations since Lucifer and the Ethereal Breaking. His original minion was a quiet, calm, distant man called Seir who represented his peace.

During a battle, he noticed Sidriel (then a recently appointed Council Member) injured, and saved his life. He had never been a fan of war, and when he noticed Sidriel was a Council Member he saw an opportunity to reach for the end of conflict. Sidriel and he eventually became the architects of the Covenant and Accords of Peace. To enforce his side of the bargain, Beleth sent the only man he could trust to uphold his truce: his cousin Prince Penemuel. Penemuel had a claim on the throne but was loyal entirely to Beleth, but this exile to the Mirror Valley would cause a fracture in their relationship.

With his father's death, Beleth was forced to assume the throne and bring all of Hell under his command through force. To do this, he was supposed to (like all other demon kings before him) wed his sister, Astaroth, and keep the royal line pure. But Astaroth refused him, and she instead ran away, weakening him in the eyes of his would-be supporters and flaunting his weakness by giving birth to Zepar, the son of a lesser demon from a corrupted line.

Because his power base was already weak, Beleth was forced to reconcile his power the only way he could. He hunted down his sister and had her killed, then imprisoned his half-breed heir until he would become useful. When Sidriel learned what Beleth had done, he broke off ties. Beleth eventually succeeded in reuniting Hell under his rule, but was left alone and without allies. In the conflicted state, he finally summoned the Queen of Hell, Marchosias, the minion created by Lucifer, and set about ruling Hell with an iron fist. This included mistreating his heir, Zepar, who eventually escaped, though he did continue to uphold the peace accords he and Sidriel had signed through the timeline of The Devil's Smile.
